Martyn Luscombe, NHS

If you consider that the NHS holds some of the most sensitive and personal information on patients then you probably understand that cyber security is something that this much loved organization naturally takes very seriously.

At University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust that role falls to Martyn Luscombe in his role as IM&T Security Officer. As a self-confessed tech and gadget ‘geek’, Martyn started his IT career as a self-employed, web developer but moved in to cyber security as he progressed.

Part of this process was the CISM course that Martyn undertook with BIT, which gave him a greater understanding of governance, compliance and risk as well as an important element to add to his CV.

These days Martyn hold a Masters Degree in Cyber Security and sees himself in five years time as a Chief Security Officer. For Martyn, the industry has some significant opportunities for the right people entering it. The future is very bright for the IT industry as tech keeps moving forward at such an impressive rate.

But, when it comes to it, Martyn’s job within the NHS is not just about money, it’s about risk to life and that’s something that he has to bear in mind every working day.
